In the supernatural world of Vampire Academy, we follow two young girls who attend a prestigious private school for vampires called St. Vladimir's Academy. However, this is not your typical high school, as the students are not just trying to pass their classes, but rather, they are training to become either Moroi or Dhampirs. The Moroi are vampire royalty with magical abilities and are mortal, while the Dhampirs are their bodyguards, who are a mix of human and vampire and have heightened physical abilities. Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch) is a Dhampir who is training to become a bodyguard for her best friend and Moroi princess, Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry).
The film begins with Rose and Lissa running away from the academy after a car crash that was orchestrated by an unknown attacker. They are caught and brought back to the academy where they face consequences for their actions. Lissa is struggling with her royal duties and her magical abilities, while Rose is trying to protect her from the danger that seems to be lurking around every corner.
As the plot unfolds, we learn that Lissa has a rare gift among Moroi, the ability to control an element in nature. However, she is unable to control her power and it is causing her emotional distress. Meanwhile, Rose is also dealing with emotional turmoil as she is falling in love with her mentor, Dimitri Belikov (Danila Kozlovskiy). The forbidden romance between the two adds an element of drama to the story.
The danger that the two best friends are facing becomes more apparent as attacks on the academy escalate. There is a group of Strigoi, immortal and evil vampires who feed on the blood of Moroi, who are hunting Lissa. The students and staff at St. Vladimir's Academy must work together to protect her from the Strigoi threat.
The film is directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) and is based on the popular book series by Richelle Mead. The adaptation stays true to the book, but with some necessary changes to make it a more cinematic experience. The action scenes are well choreographed, and the special effects are impressive. The film has a well-rounded cast, with Zoey Deutch giving a standout performance as Rose Hathaway. Her comedic timing and ability to switch from tough to vulnerable make her a great lead. Lucy Fry brings depth to her character Lissa Dragomir, portraying the character as both a princess and a teenager figuring out her place in the world. Danila Kozlovskiy delivers as Dimitri Belikov, portraying the character as strong and stoic, but still allowing for some vulnerability.
Overall, Vampire Academy is an entertaining film with a mix of action, romance, and supernatural elements. It is aimed towards a younger audience, but it has enough appeal for adults who are fans of the book series or the genre. It is an enjoyable watch with likable characters and an interesting world building concept. Though it was not a box office success, it is a film that deserves a chance and can be a fun watch for anyone looking for an exciting supernatural adventure.
