Utsav is a 1984 Indian movie that's a romantic drama produced by Shashi Kapoor and directed by Girish Karnad. It stars Rekha, Amjad Khan, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. The film is based on Harsha's 2nd-century Sanskrit play called 'Mrichakatika' which means The Little Clay Cart. The story is set in Ancient India, during the reign of the Gupta Empire. It follows the life of Vasantsena (Rekha), a beautiful courtesan from the city of Ujjayini. She falls in love with Charudatta (Shekhar Suman), a poor but virtuous Brahmin who lives in the city. However, Vasantsena is the mistress of the wicked merchant Samsthanak (Amjad Khan) who desires her and wants to possess her wholly.

Things start to get complicated when Samsthanak's brother-in-law, a rich businessman named Nipun (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), falls head over heels in love with Vasantsena. He soon discovers that she is in love with Charudatta and wants to help the couple. Meanwhile, Samsthanak creates a scheme and implicates Charudatta in a theft that he did not commit, causing him to be arrested and sentenced to death.

Vasantsena desperately tries to save Charudatta using her influence with Samsthanak, and thankfully, she is able to secure Charudatta's release. After his release, Vasantsena and Charudatta join Nipun in an escape from Ujjayini. However, en route, Samsthanak and his henchmen catch up to them, leading to an intense showdown that puts everyone's lives in danger.

Throughout the movie Utsav, the story unfolds at a leisurely and romantic pace, moving from encounter to encounter with delightfully flavored mischief, artful seduction, and the fluid exchange of life paths surrounding Charudatta and Vasantsena in the midst of money, privilege, class, guilt, truth, and love. The movie transports the audience to a romanticized version of ancient India with its rich cultural customs.

The film is a visual delight, with detailed sets, vibrant costumes, and a superb musical score by A.R. Rahman. The lead actors, Rekha and Shekhar Suman, deliver powerhouse performances. Rekha's portrayal of Vasantsena was enchanting, and Shekhar Suman's fragile and dignified character was absolutely brilliant. Amjad Khan, as always, was superb in his role as the evil merchant Samsthanak.

Overall, the movie Utsav is a classic Bollywood film that delves into the themes of love, lust, morality, and power. The movie's timeless appeal has endeared it to Bollywood fans for decades, and its popularity continues to endure to this day. With its unforgettable cast, captivating story, and iconic music, Utsav is a must-watch for any fan of Bollywood romantic dramas.
