Unsilenced is a 2021 movie that revolves around the story of a father's desperate efforts to save his daughter from the brutal hands of oppression. The movie features an eclectic cast, with Sam Trammell playing the father, Tzu-Chiang Wang as the legendary Chinese dissident and activist Chen Guangcheng, and James Yi as the father's interpreter.

Set in 2012, the movie starts by introducing us to Derek Cho (Sam Trammell) as a hotshot American lawyer who has successfully won a case against a Chinese sweatshop. He is living a luxurious life until his daughter, Lily (Christine Von Robarie), is orphaned by her mother's tragic death. Derek's life takes a drastic turn, and he moves to China to bring up his daughter and offer her a safe and prosperous future.

However, things do not turn out as planned. The father-daughter duo is forced to move to a remote village after Derek's promotion and is surrounded by oppressive socialist rhetoric. Amidst this, Lily's health starts deteriorating, and Derek is forced to take help from a local translator, Zhou (James Yi), to communicate with the villagers.

Their arrival coincides with the detention of Chen Guangcheng (Tzu-Chiang Wang), a blind activist trying to resist the brutal family-planning policy imposed by the government. Like many activists before him, Chen is jailed and tortured for his dissenting voice, and his family is constantly under surveillance. However, Chen miraculously manages to escape jail and seeks refuge at Derek's home.

With this unforeseen development, Derek is faced with the biggest challenge of his life. He has to save his daughter from a life of oppression and also protect Chen and his family while devising plans to get them safely out of China. He has to navigate a labyrinth of corruption and lies while keeping his daughter's interests at heart.

The movie is an intense emotional experience that explores the themes of fatherhood, oppression, and resilience. The dynamics between the characters are thoroughly explored, and the audience is left breathless through the movie's climax. The characters' individual journeys and struggles are excellently portrayed, making the viewers feel for each one of them.

Sam Trammell delivers a terrific performance as the father grappling with his daughter's illness and the country's oppressive regime. His on-screen chemistry with young newcomer Christine Von Robarie is heartwarming and engaging. Tzu-Chiang Wang portrays the legendary activist Chen Guangcheng with incredible conviction.

The storyline is beautifully woven and executed, making for a thrilling and emotionally engaging movie. It's a movie that touches on topics like human rights, and it's a homage to the brave individuals who stood (and continue to stand) up for their rights in the face of oppression.

All in all, Unsilenced is a captivating and memorable cinematic experience filled with drama, action, and emotion. It's an outstanding movie that should be on everyone's must-watch list for 2021.
