Unlucky Plaza is a 2014 crime-drama film directed by Ken Kwek, which follows the story of a Filipino immigrant named Onassis Hernandez, who is struggling to make ends meet in Singapore. The film stars Jeffrey Quizon as Onassis, Adrian Pang as Terrence, a corrupt landlord, and Judee Tan as Irma, a disgruntled housewife. Onassis is a struggling restaurateur in Singapore trying to provide for his family. He is behind on his rent, his restaurant is going bust, and his wife is threatening to leave him. In a desperate attempt to keep his business afloat, he takes out a loan from loan shark, Terrence.

Things start to look up for Onassis when he decides to cheat his customers out of their money. Successful for a while, Onassis is eventually caught by the police, and his restaurant is closed down. Terrence turns up at Onassis’ apartment demanding his money back, along with his gang of thugs. Terrence forces Onassis to participate in a plan to kidnap his ex-wife in order to get more money from her wealthy husband.

What follows is a story filled with twists and turns, as Onassis tries to get out of the mess he’s gotten himself into. With the help of his housemaid and the kidnapping victim, he tries to turn his life around and escape Terrence’s clutches.

The film is a dark and gritty thriller that delves into the underbelly of Singapore’s criminal underworld. It’s a film that explores themes of immigration, family, and loyalty, while also showcasing the harsh realities of life for many immigrants trying to make a living in a foreign country.

Jeffrey Quizon delivers an impressive performance as Onassis, the hapless immigrant who gets caught up in a life of crime. His character is complex, and Quizon does an excellent job of portraying him as a man who is desperate to provide for his family, but also has a fundamental sense of right and wrong.

Adrian Pang also shines in his portrayal of Terrence, the corrupt landlord who is more than happy to exploit those around him for financial gain. He’s a character that’s easy to hate, and Pang does an excellent job of bringing him to life on screen.

Judee Tan is equally impressive as Irma, the housewife who gets caught up in the kidnapping plot. She’s a character that’s initially presented as being somewhat of a caricature, but as the film progresses, she becomes a more fully realized character with her own motivations and desires.

Overall, Unlucky Plaza is a film that’s well worth watching. It’s a well-crafted crime thriller that offers a unique look at Singapore’s criminal underworld, while also exploring themes of family and loyalty. The performances are excellent across the board, and the direction is strong, keeping the twists and turns of the plot engaging and suspenseful throughout.

Unlucky Plaza is a 2016 comedy with a runtime of 2 hours and 2 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1 and a MetaScore of 38.
