Union Bound is a gripping Civil War drama film based on real-life events. Directed by Harvey Lowry, the movie was released in 2016, and it stars Sean Stone, Randy Wayne, and Tank Jones in the lead roles. The film unfolds in the 1860s when America was divided by war. Union Bound tells the story of Joseph Hoover, a Union soldier who is captured by Confederate troops during a skirmish in Georgia. He is taken to a prison camp in South Carolina, where he meets a fellow prisoner, an African-American slave, and lawyer named Obobo. Together, they form a bond that transcends race and hardships.
Joseph, the Union soldier, is resolved to escape from the prison camp and rejoin his comrades. However, he quickly realizes that he cannot achieve this alone. He then seeks the help of Obobo, who has knowledge of the local terrain and customs.
Together, they embark on a perilous journey, which takes them through the swamps and forests of the deep south, that held many obstacles and dangers at every turn. They escape from the confines of the prison camp and travel north until coming across a farm belonging to Martha, played by Trish Cook, which is situated along the Underground Railroad. Sheing is a couple who provides aid and shelter to escapees who are heading to freedom.
Obobo is seeking freedom for himself and his family, where they can live a life of dignity and respect, and his help to Joseph raises the stakes of a daring and dramatic journey to freedom through the boiling backdrop of the Civil War.
Union Bound delivers an outstanding combination of storytelling and historical accuracy that captivates an audience in a way that few movies do. The scenery and the attention to detail transport the audience back in time, and the wretched conditions of the prison camps are portrayed in a way that is both horrifying and accurate. The director does not shy away from the brutality of the conditions endured in these camps, establishing the severe nature of the eraâs issues.
The performances of the ensemble cast bring a genuine and authentic feel to the movie. Sean Stone delivers an exceptional performance as Joseph Hoover, a man who is striving to escape the confines of his reality and return to his loved ones. Tank Jones draws attention as the wise and compassionate Obobo, who, despite being a prisoner, possesses a wealth of knowledge that becomes invaluable at various points during the journey.
The period-correct costumes, the hairstyles, and, most importantly, the set design of the movie transport the audience to the 1800s. Harvey Lowry has done an excellent job of creating a sense of authenticity and historical accuracy that keeps the viewer engaged.
One of the most remarkable things about Union Bound is that it tells an important historical story that is often overlooked in American history. This movie is not only about the story of two men who took a significant risk to gain their freedom; it is also about the real-life story of thousands of slaves who escaped during the Civil War through the Underground Railroad.
In summary, Union Bound is an exceptional piece of historical fiction that tells the story of the struggles and hardships of two men as they strive for freedom during a tumultuous period in American history. The performances, set design, and attention to detail are genuinely impressive, and it is a must-watch for anyone interested in American history or wants to witness an outstanding film.
