Underwater is a thrilling sci-fi horror film that takes place in the depths of the ocean. The movie follows an isolated group of underwater researchers who are forced to navigate their way to safety when their deep sea drilling facility is destroyed by a mysterious earthquake. They soon discover that they are not alone down there and must fight for their lives against a deadly force that threatens to destroy them all.

The film begins with Norah (Kristen Stewart), a mechanical engineer who is working on the bottom of the ocean on a research facility called Kepler 822. She's in the middle of brushing her teeth when the facility is rocked by a massive earthquake. Norah scrambles to get out of her bunk just as water comes flooding into the room. The first few minutes of Underwater are fraught with tension as Norah struggles to find her way to safety in the midst of the chaos. She manages to make it to the control room, where she finds that most of her colleagues have already perished in the disaster.

Norah soon meets up with the rest of the survivors - a group of six other workers who are all equally desperate to find a way out of the research facility. They include the captain of the drilling rig, Lucien (Vincent Cassel), and the resident biologist, Emily (Jessica Henwick). They quickly realize that the cause of the earthquake was not natural and that something dangerous is lurking in the depths of the ocean.

The group sets out to find a way to escape the facility, but they soon discover that they are not alone. Strange creatures, perhaps mutated by the drilling, are attacking the group at every turn. It quickly becomes clear that the group must work together if they have any hope of surviving the onslaught. Norah, who is the most experienced diver of the group, takes charge of the situation, and they journey deeper into the abyss in search of a way out.

Underwater is a fast-paced and intense movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Director William Eubank does a great job of building suspense, and the special effects are top-notch. The underwater scenes are stunning, and the creatures are genuinely terrifying.

The film's pacing is relentless; there's no time to catch your breath as the group is constantly under threat. Underwater is also notably tight-lipped as to why and how everything is happening; the audience is thrown into the deep end at the same time as the characters. The isolation and claustrophobia of being trapped in an underwater facility offer the perfect backdrop for a thriller like this, allowing tension to build even in the lulls between attacks.

Kristen Stewart delivers a fantastic performance as Norah, the tough and resourceful engineer. She's a great protagonist, and you root for her every step of the way. Vincent Cassel is also fantastic as the grizzled captain of the facility, and Mamoudou Athie delivers a solid performance as the rookie engineer, Rodrigo.

Overall, Underwater is a tightly-crafted, suspenseful sci-fi horror movie that offers a thrilling ride from start to finish. It's an excellent example of how to combine science fiction with horror to great effect, and is definitely worth a watch for fans of either genre.

Underwater is a 2020 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.9 and a MetaScore of 48.
