A Mexican-American co-production, this film featured a supporting cast of locals, for an unusually authentic feel for the period. Sara (Shirley MacLaine) is a young woman traveling in Mexico to helping the Juarista revolutionaries fight against the French during the Second Franco-Mexican War of the mid 19th century. Hogan (Clint Eastwood) is a hardened mercenary who is also working for the Mexicans, albeit for less altruistic reasons, when he rescues her from a gang of bandits.
He agrees to take her to a Mexican camp, mainly since it fits with his plans anyway, and along the way is bemused by the fact that although she says she is a nun she seems very worldly. She drinks, smokes, and shoots, and doesn't seem averse to some
Directed by Don Siegel who collaborated with Eastwood on several other films during the decade. Shot on location in Mexico and featuring a classic Ennio Morricone music score.
