Two Flags West is a 1950 American Western film directed by Robert Wise, starring Joseph Cotten, Linda Darnell, and Jeff Chandler. The movie revolves around the story of the Civil War veterans who are fighting for their own individual battles in the post-Civil War era. The story takes place in 1865, after the end of the Civil War. Union Army Colonel Clay Tucker (Joseph Cotten) is leading a group of Confederate prisoners to Fort Thorn in New Mexico. He is accompanied by his daughter Elena (Linda Darnell) and a unit of African American soldiers. Among the prisoners is Confederate Captain Ben Trane (Jeff Chandler), who is determined to escape and make his way back to his home in Texas.

As they travel through the unforgiving desert, tensions between the Union soldiers, the Confederate prisoners, and the African American soldiers rise. The situation becomes more complicated when Tucker learns that Confederate General Sterling Price has plans to launch an invasion of the territory.

To counter the threat, Tucker offers the Confederate prisoners a choice: they can continue to the fort and be treated fairly, or they can join his army and help defend the territory. Trane reluctantly agrees to help Tucker, and the prisoners become soldiers in the Union Army. They march towards Santa Fe to fight against the Confederate general.

During the journey, Trane falls in love with Elena, but knows that his Confederate past will ultimately come between them. He also forms a bond with the African American soldiers in his unit, who are impressed with his fighting skills and soon come to respect him.

When they finally reach Santa Fe, the Union Army is outnumbered and outgunned by Price's troops. Tucker is captured, and it is up to Trane and the former Confederate prisoners to save him and prevent the Confederate invasion of the territory. In the end, Trane must make a difficult choice between his loyalty to the Union and his love for Elena.

The movie is a classic western story of redemption, loyalty, and love. It presents the post-Civil War era through the eyes of the soldiers who fought the war, and shows the difficult choices they had to make in the aftermath. The performances of the lead actors, especially Joseph Cotten and Jeff Chandler, are outstanding. The movie also features beautiful cinematography, showcasing the rugged landscapes of New Mexico.

Overall, Two Flags West is a must-watch for anyone who loves classic Western movies. It represents the pinnacle of the genre and the golden era of Hollywood filmmaking.
