Tumbbad is a horror film directed by Rahi Anil Barve and produced by Sohum Shah. The story revolves around a young boy Vinayak, played by Sohum Shah, who is fascinated by his grandmother's stories about the goddess of wealth, Hastar. She tells him about Tumbbad, a village that once prospered because of the blessings of Hastar, but now is a desolate place haunted by the goddess herself.
Vinayak's father, who hails from Tumbbad, has left the village and abandoned his family. Vinayak and his mother live in poverty, and Vinayak is desperate to find a way to make his fortune. One day, he discovers a secret chamber in his ancestral home that contains an ancient relic, a key that unlocks access to a hidden treasure that once belonged to Hastar.
Vinayak becomes obsessed with the treasure, and despite his mother's warnings, he continues to search for it, becoming more and more consumed by his greed. He returns to Tumbbad and enlists the help of a trusted accomplice, a village woman named Rani, played by Jyoti Malshe. Together they begin to explore the hidden chambers of the ancient vault, where they encounter terrifying creatures that guard the treasure.
As Vinayak continues to search for the treasure, he discovers that Hastar was not an ordinary goddess but an evil entity that had to be appeased with human sacrifice. Vinayak realizes that the treasure is cursed, and those who possess it will be haunted by the goddess for eternity.
Tumbbad is a visually stunning movie with breathtaking cinematography and eerie sound design that immerses the audience in the world of the film. The director's attention to detail is evident in every scene, from the grotesque creatures to the intricate set design of the ancient vault.
Sohum Shah delivers a powerful performance as Vinayak, capturing the character's desperation and obsession perfectly. Jyoti Malshe is also excellent as Rani, a strong-willed woman who becomes Vinayak's partner in crime.
One of the most impressive aspects of Tumbbad is the way it blends horror with themes of greed and morality. The film raises important questions about the price of wealth and the dangers of unchecked ambition.
Tumbbad is not a film for the faint of heart. It contains gruesome imagery and intense scenes of horror that will leave audiences stunned. However, it is also a masterpiece of Indian cinema that showcases the tremendous talent of its director and lead actor.
