Troll 2 is a horror-comedy movie from 1990, directed by Italian filmmaker Claudio Fragasso. The film follows the story of a family, the Waits, who exchange homes with a family from a small town called Nilbog. The Waits, together with their teenage son Josh, are excited to leave the city and experience rural life, but they soon discover that something sinister is lurking in the town.
At the beginning of the film, we see the story of a young boy named Joshua Waits, played by Michael Paul Stephenson, who is dreaming of wizards and goblins in a mysterious forest. The scene soon changes, and we find Joshua and his family, including mom (Margo Prey) and dad (George Hardy), packing up their belongings to trade homes with a family living in Nilbog, Utah.
Once they arrive in Nilbog, the family is greeted by the locals, who are all vegetarians and seem to be quite odd. Despite warnings from Joshua's dead grandfather in his dreams, the family decides to stay and digs into the tasty vegetarian meals that the locals provide them.
Soon enough, Joshua discovers that the people of Nilbog aren't really vegetarians, but are instead goblins disguised as humans who plan to turn the Waits family and their friends into plants so that they can feast on them. In a race against time, the family must find a way to stop the goblins and save their lives.
Despite the movie's title, there are actually no trolls in Troll 2, only goblins. The film's script and acting are often cited as some of the worst in cinema history, leading to its cult following as a "so bad it's good" movie.
Troll 2 was initially released direct-to-video in 1990 and didn't receive much attention until the mid-2000s, when it gained a cult following for its bizarre storyline, wooden acting, and numerous plot holes. The movie's popularity spawned several documentaries, including Best Worst Movie, which follows the film's child star Michael Paul Stephenson as he reflects on his time on the set and the film's unexpected cult success.
One of the key factors that made Troll 2 so infamous is its notoriously awful dialogue, with lines such as "They're eating her...and then they're going to eat me...OH MY GOOOOOOOD!" becoming iconic in their terribleness. The film's low budget is also apparent in the cheap special effects and makeup, which add to the movie's campy appeal.
Despite its reputation as one of the worst films ever made, Troll 2 has a dedicated fanbase who revel in its absurdity, and it remains a popular choice for midnight movie screenings and Halloween viewings. Its popularity also helped to launch Michael Paul Stephenson's career as a filmmaker, and he has since directed several documentaries and feature films.
Troll 2 is a 1990 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.0.
