Triple 9 is a riveting crime thriller that follows a group of corrupt cops and their attempts to pull off a heist. Starring Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Anthony Mackie, the movie explores the themes of loyalty, morality, and the consequences of one's actions. The plot of the movie centers around Michael Atwood (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a former special forces operative who now works as a thief. Along with his crew, which includes his partner in crime, Russell Welch (Norman Reedus), and two dirty cops Marcus Belmont (Anthony Mackie) and Franco Rodriguez (Clifton Collins Jr.), the group plans to rob a heavily guarded bank. However, in order to carry out the heist, they need to divert the attention of the police by causing a 999, the code for an officer down.
Enter Chris Allen (Casey Affleck), a by-the-book cop and new member of the force who gets caught up in the web of corruption and crime. As Chris begins to uncover the truth behind the heist and the corrupt cops involved, he finds himself in the crosshairs of the very same people he is trying to bring to justice.
The cast of Triple 9 delivers outstanding performances, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their characters. Chiwetel Ejiofor shines as Michael Atwood, a man struggling with his moral compass and the weight of his past actions. Anthony Mackie delivers a memorable performance as Marcus Belmont, a cop torn between his loyalty to his team and his duty to the police force. Meanwhile, Casey Affleck brings his trademark understated intensity to his portrayal of Chris Allen, the honest cop who is out of his depth.
Director John Hillcoat creates a tense and gritty atmosphere, capturing the seedy underbelly of the city and the desperation of those trying to survive within it. The action scenes are intense and pulse-pounding, with the heist sequence in particular standing out as a highlight of the movie.
The movie is not without its flaws, however. Some of the plot points feel a bit too contrived and convenient, and the character motivations at times feel underdeveloped. Additionally, some of the actors, such as Woody Harrelson, are underused and do not get enough screen time to make a real impact.
Overall, Triple 9 is a solid crime thriller that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The performances are strong, the action is intense, and the themes of loyalty and morality are explored in an interesting and compelling way. While it may not be a perfect movie, it is certainly worth a watch for fans of the genre.
