Tremors 2: Aftershocks is a 1996 American creature feature and horror film, directed by S. S. Wilson, and is a sequel to the 1990 cult classic Tremors. The movie brings back characters such as Earl Bassett (played by Fred Ward), who returns to the small desert town of Perfection and teams up with fellow "graboid" hunter Grady Hoover (Chris Gartin) to combat a resurrected strain of the deadly underground creatures.
The film begins with a prologue that features Earl now in financial ruin following the events of the first Tremors movie. He is offered a job by Mexican oil barons to destroy a group of "Shriekers", another breed of monstrous subterranean creatures that are destroyed when their senses are overwhelmed by loud noises. Earl enlists Grady to help him, and they make their way to a remote oil drilling facility in the Mexican desert.
Upon arrival, Earl and Grady are introduced to a group of scientists, including Dr. Kate Reilly (Helen Shaver), who have been studying the Shriekers. It is revealed that the Shriekers reproduce asexually through a process called "ass-blasting" - they grow little eggs inside their bodies which they then literally shoot out of their rear ends. The team soon discovers that the Shriekers are evolving rapidly, and that they have developed a hermaphroditic breeding cycle.
As the Shriekers continue to multiply and hunt for food, the group becomes stranded in the desert, with no hope of rescue. However, they soon discover that the Shriekers have a weakness - they are unable to detect sound when they are cooled to a low temperature. This leads to the group embarking on a dangerous and thrilling mission to stop the Shriekers by blasting them with a makeshift freeze bomb.
Tremors 2: Aftershocks offers a new take on the original storyline, with the Shriekers being both a more advanced and more formidable enemy than the graboids from the first film. The movie offers a good mix of action, suspense, and humor. Fred Ward reprises his role as Earl with enthusiasm and wit, while Chris Gartin as Grady Hoover adds a new layer of humor to the film. Helen Shaver as Dr. Reilly, although a tad underdeveloped, provides intelligence and a strong female presence.
Perhaps, the movie's most notable change is the absence of Kevin Bacon, who played the lead role of Val McKee in the first Tremors movie. However, Michael Gross provides a fantastic supporting performance as Burt Gummer, a gun-wielding survivalist and conspiracy theorist who becomes involved in the group's fight against the Shriekers. Gross' portrayal of the paranoid, yet always prepared Burt Gummer, provides an entertaining and memorable addition to the film.
The special effects in Tremors 2: Aftershocks are impressive, especially given the movie's relatively low budget. The scenes featuring the Shriekers are well done, and the sound design helps immerse the audience in the creatures' point of view. The use of practical effects and miniatures adds a level of authenticity to the film's action sequences, which are well choreographed and thrilling to watch.
Overall, Tremors 2: Aftershocks serves as a satisfying sequel to the cult classic original. It does not try to retread the same ground, but instead builds on the original's universe while introducing new, exciting elements. With strong performances, good humor, and impressive special effects, it is a movie that any fan of creature features and horror movies should not miss.
Tremors 2: Aftershocks is a 1995 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.0.
