She is both agitator and activist, paparazzo and popular icon. Holly Van Voast, or as some know her, Harvey Van Toast, uses her skills as a photographer and journalist to highlight a modern feminist hot-point. This movie is a first person perspective documentary focusing on the subject of toplessness in public. There is a growing population of women who feel that the inequality of male topless acceptance, in contrast to female, is extraordinarily prejudiced and absurd.
This documentary follows Ms. Van Voast into her personal experiences as a topless paparazzo in situations ranging from Hollywood interviews, to enlightening explorations of the metro drag underground. She only interviews people while topless, and captures an amazing spectrum of reactions. These reactions highlight the way that society perceives a topless female who is unashamed, and who considers toplessness to be an appropriate everyday style.
Van Voast never makes her appearance the center of her interviews, but it always elicits the most awkward reactions. Her goal is to show the world how perceptions lead to misunderstandings, and how women are still sadly objectified in every corner of society. Even in the most fringe groups, her style of journalism is shocking. This movie is an eye-opening series of real life interviews that have the power to change a person's perspective on what modern propriety and self-confidence really means.
Topless Shock Syndrome is a 2007 documentary with a runtime of 1 hour.
