The movie is based on a novel by famed Russian writer Boris Vasiliev. It describes life in a small Russian town in 1940 - one year before Hitler and Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Two young girls discover for the first time in their lives about how leader Joseph Stalin committed barbarous acts of repression against his own citizens. These findings profoundly change the girls' lives forever. The movie was filmed in the Soviet Union with an entirely Russian cast, as a part of the Glasnost policies of President Mikhail Gorbachev as he steered the country towards reform at the time.
