In the 1992 family comedy movie To Grandmother's House We Go, twin sisters Julie and Sarah (played by Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen, respectively) decide to take matters into their own hands when they realize that their single mother (played by Rhea Perlman) is too overworked and underappreciated to get them the Christmas presents they want.
So, the mischievous duo sets out on a journey to go visit their grandmother (played by Cynthia Geary) who lives in a cozy little cabin in the woods. Believing that their grandmother has nothing else to do all day but bake cookies and play games, Julie and Sarah think that she'll be the perfect person to help them achieve their Christmas wishes.
Their trip, however, doesn't go as smoothly as they plan. They face a series of mishaps and misadventures along the way, including getting on the wrong bus, losing their money, and accidentally riding in a car with two robbers.
Despite their troubles, Julies and Sarah remain determined to reach their grandmother's home. Along the way, they meet a young hitchhiker named Eddie (played by J. Eddie Peck) who they team up with, and he becomes their loyal ally.
Once they finally arrive at their grandmother's cabin, the twins realize that they were wrong about her abilities. She has no idea what they want for Christmas, and is very busy trying to cook and clean up the house for the arrival of her own grandkids.
As the day progresses, the girls keep their grandmother busy helping them with a string of fun, family-friendly activities. They make homemade gingerbread cookies, dress up in costume, and even give their grandmother some well-deserved TLC.
However, as darkness falls and the robbers from their earlier misadventure come knocking on their door, the girls and their grandmother must band together to outsmart them.
To Grandmother's House We Go is a charming, lighthearted movie which showcases the Olsen Twins' talent as child actresses. It's a good family movie about the importance of family value and how the magic of Christmas is the memories that we create with our loved ones. The chemistry shared among Ashley and Mary-Kate is admirable, and they perfectly play off each other's personalities.
Overall, To Grandmother's House We Go is a family-friendly and heartwarming movie that teaches the value of family support, the importance of being self-aware, and the true meaning of Christmas - making it perfect for family night.
