Three Smart Girls is a 1936 musical comedy that tells the story of three sisters, Joan, Kay, and Penny Craig, who are determined to save their parents' marriage. The parents, Louise and Judge James K. Craig, have been living separately and on the brink of a divorce due to their constant bickering and disagreements. The three girls live with their mother in Switzerland, where Louise has taken up residence with her boyfriend, the wealthy and pompous Cyril Raymond. The girls receive a letter from their father, asking them to come to New York and spend some time with him. When they arrive, they find out that their father has fallen in love with a gold-digging opera singer named Donna Lyons, who is only interested in his status and money.
The girls are horrified by the news and come up with a plan to break up their father's relationship and reunite their parents. They use their youthful charm and wit to manipulate the situation, including posing as their father's secretary, hiring a composer to pretend to be a wealthy suitor for Donna, and even convincing Cyril to propose to Louise. Through their efforts, the girls are able to bring their parents back together and save their marriage.
The movie features an all-star cast, including Binnie Barnes as Donna Lyons, Charles Winninger as Judge James K. Craig, and Alice Brady as Louise Craig. The three young actresses who play the Craig sisters, Nan Grey, Deanna Durbin, and Barbara Read, are also highlights of the film, especially Durbin, who was only 14 years old at the time of filming and made her debut as a singer.
The music in the movie is catchy and engaging, including the popular song "Someone to Care for Me" performed by Durbin, which became a hit at the time of the film's release. Other musical numbers include "My Heart Is Singing" and "The Last Rose of Summer."
Three Smart Girls was a huge success at the box office, making Durbin a world-famous star and leading to two sequels, Three Smart Girls Grow Up and Hers to Hold. The film is a lighthearted and fun family comedy with charming performances and catchy music that still entertains audiences today.
