The Prozoroff sisters - Irina, Masha and Olga - are in deep mourning over their recently deceased father. Their lives seem much bleaker and more uncertain. Each of them harbors secret desires, but they feel trapped in their current lives. Making things worse is their brother, who marries a peasant who means to push them out of the family home. They lean on each other no matter how difficult their lives become, and they continue to dream of the day when the three of them might venture together to make a new life for themselves in the city of Moscow.
