Three Night Stand is a 2013 romantic comedy directed by Pat Kiely and written by Kiely and his co-writer, Aaron Aites. The movie stars Sam Huntington as Carl, a man who takes his girlfriend, Sue (played by Meaghan Rath), on a weekend getaway to a ski resort. Once they arrive, however, Carl is forced to confront a romantic encounter from his past, in the form of his ex-girlfriend, Robyn (played by Emilie Ullerup). The comedy revolves around the awkwardness and the complications that arise from this unexpected reunion.

The film begins with Carl and Sue driving towards the ski resort, discussing their future plans and concerns with each other. Carl, an aspiring writer, is feeling insecure about the widespread rejection of his work and fears that he will never be able to make a living as a writer. Sue, on the other hand, is a business executive who is proud of her success and financial independence. The movie sets up their relationship as being imbalanced, with Carl feeling emasculated and vulnerable in the face of Sue's professional prowess.

Upon reaching the resort, Carl and Sue are greeted by the receptionist who informs them that there has been a mistake with their booking and that they will have to share the chalet with someone else. That someone else turns out to be Robyn, Carl's ex-girlfriend who he had a one-night stand with many years ago. Robyn is also at the resort with her new boyfriend, Shawn (played by Darren Curtis), who is oblivious to any past relationship between Robyn and Carl.

The bulk of the movie revolves around the three couples navigating the awkwardness of their situation. Carl tries to avoid Robyn in order to maintain his relationship with Sue, but finds himself drawn to her once again. Robyn, meanwhile, is struggling to come to terms with her feelings for Carl and her relationship with Shawn. Sue, sensing that there is something secretive going on between Carl and Robyn, becomes jealous and suspicious, and starts to investigate on her own.

As the three couples spend more time together, secrets and truths are revealed that change the dynamics of their relationships. The characters are all flawed and multi-dimensional, and the film does a good job of showing the complexity of human interactions. It's not just a love triangle, but a complex web of emotions, desires and ambitions that slowly unravel over the course of the weekend.

The film also has a strong sense of place, with the ski resort setting adding an air of isolation and desolation to the proceedings. The snowy landscape and the chilly interiors of the chalet create a palpable sense of discomfort and unease that perfectly matches the emotional turmoil of the characters. The cinematography is understated but effective, highlighting the bleakness of the setting and the isolation of the characters.

The performances of the actors are also noteworthy. Sam Huntington brings a vulnerability and rawness to Carl's character, making him sympathetic even in his moments of weakness. Meaghan Rath perfectly captures the alpha female persona of Sue, but also shows her vulnerabilities and insecurities. Emilie Ullerup plays Robyn with a complexity that makes her the most interesting character of the three. Her inner conflict and struggle to reconcile her past with her present makes her a compelling presence on screen.

Overall, Three Night Stand is a well-crafted romantic comedy that manages to be funny, touching and insightful without resorting to cliches or sentimentality. It's a rare gem of a movie that balances humor and heart with a deft hand, and is well worth watching for fans of the genre.
