Watch Three-Dimensional Geometry

Beginning with Plato and Platonic solids, this program explores the geometric properties of 3D shapes, including pyramids and prisms. Examples from the ancient Maya, including the Temple of the Inscriptions and Chichen Itza, illustrate geometric concepts. A second section uses the Shanghai Tower in China as a practical example of how geometry is used in architecture to create stable structures. At its core, the tower is made of stacked cylinders, each one narrower and taller than the last. The program analyzes the volume and surface area these cylinders provide and applies these characteristics to their practical applications in the building: less weight with essentially the same amount of space for offices and homes.
