Thoppil Joppan is a 2016 Malayalam-language comedy-drama film directed by Johny Antony, starring Mammootty in the titular role. The film features Andrea Jeremiah and Mamta Mohandas in leading roles. It was written by Nishad Koya and produced by Noushad Alathur under the banner of Grande Film Corporation. The story revolves around Thoppil Joppan (played by Mammootty), a notorious alcoholic who is quite famous in his village for his humorous one-liners and reckless behavior. Despite being a lackadaisical person, people in his village adore him and seek his advice on various matters. However, Joppan has a soft corner for Annie (played by Andrea Jeremiah), a Christian girl whom he met during his college days. He consistently tries to woo her, but she always turns down his advances citing his alcoholism.

Joppan's life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Maria (played by Mamta Mohandas), a village officer who comes to investigate a case against him. Despite their initial disagreements, as time passes, Joppan and Maria develop a fondness for each other, which leads to a romantic angle in the story. Meanwhile, Joppan's love for Annie and his desire to overcome his addiction forms the central conflict of the story.

The first half of the movie primarily revolves around introducing the character of Joppan and establishing his reputation in the village. The humor in the first half is predominantly slapstick and situational, with Joppan's inebriated state leading to comical situations. The second half delves into the emotional side of Joppan's character, dealing with his addiction and his yearning for love. The film takes a serious tone in the second half, with the focus shifting from comedy to drama.

Mammootty delivers an impressive performance as Thoppil Joppan, seamlessly transitioning between comic and emotional scenes. His portrayal of a love-struck drunkard is heartwarming, and he manages to imbue the character with pathos. Andrea Jeremiah is convincing as Annie, a strong-willed woman who stands up to Joppan's advances. Mamta Mohandas puts in a decent performance as Maria, with her character providing a counterpoint to Joppan's recklessness.

The film's music by Vidyasagar is soulful, with the song “Thoppil Joppan” becoming a chartbuster. The background score by Bijibal enhances the emotional moments in the film. The cinematography by Sunoj Velayudham is impressive, highlighting the beautiful locales of the Kozhikode district.

The script by Nishad Koya is a mix of humor and emotional moments, with the film not entirely succeeding in striking a balance between the two. The humor in the first half falls short in places, becoming repetitive and stale. The film's pacing is also an issue, with the second half feeling stretched in certain portions. However, the film manages to make up for its flaws with its heartfelt portrayal of Joppan's character arc.

Overall, Thoppil Joppan is an enjoyable film that manages to evoke both laughter and tears. It's a well-acted, well-made film that will appeal to fans of Mammootty's work. While it's not a perfect film, it manages to tell a story that's heartfelt and emotionally satisfying.
