This Island Earth is a science-fiction film from 1955 that follows the story of two scientists, Dr. Cal Meacham (Jeff Morrow) and Dr. Ruth Adams (Faith Domergue), who are recruited by a mysterious organization called the Electronic Service Laboratory (ESL) to work on a top-secret project. They are tasked with building an advanced communication device called an "interocitor," but they soon discover that the project is not what it seems.

As they work on the interocitor, they receive a series of strange and cryptic messages from an unknown source, which lead them to a remote location where they meet the enigmatic Exeter (played by J. Edward Bromberg). He invites them to be part of a select group of scientists who are working on a project to save their home planet from a catastrophic environmental disaster.

The scientists, along with a pilot named Steve Carlson (Rex Reason), are transported to Exeter's planet Metaluna, which is under attack from a hostile alien race called the Zagons. They learn that the Metalunans have developed a powerful new energy source called "solarite," which is essential to their survival. The project they were working on was actually a test to see if Earth's scientists were intelligent enough to be recruited to help save Metaluna.

Once they arrive on Metaluna, they witness the destruction caused by the Zagons and the battle between the two races. They are then taken to the Metalunan leader, the Monitor (Douglas Spencer), who reveals a shocking truth about the purpose of their mission. The Monitor believes the Zagons are a threat not only to Metaluna, but to the entire universe, and he plans to use Earth as a new home for the Metalunan race.

The humans are torn between their desire to help the Metalunans and their loyalty to their own planet. They soon discover that Exeter and the other Metalunans have been undergoing a physical transformation, and they begin to suspect that they may have ulterior motives. They must battle their own fears and suspicions to uncover the truth and decide the fate of both worlds.

This Island Earth is a classic example of 1950s science fiction, complete with beautiful women, daring heroes, and rubbery alien monsters. The film's special effects and alien designs are impressive for their time, and the story is engaging and full of twists and turns. It also touches on relevant themes such as loyalty, trust, and the dangers of blindly following authority.

The performances by the three leads are solid, with Jeff Morrow and Faith Domergue bringing gravitas to their roles as scientists caught up in a cosmic conflict. Rex Reason plays the dashing hero with ease, and J. Edward Bromberg brings a sinister edge to his portrayal of Exeter.

Overall, This Island Earth is a must-see for fans of classic science fiction. It delivers all the thrills and chills of the genre while also raising thought-provoking questions about humanity's place in the universe. Its legacy can be seen in numerous homages and references in pop culture, including the popular television show Mystery Science Theater 3000, which featured the film in one of its episodes.
