"Do you talk?" a young woman asks her new male therapist. She says her last therapist wouldn't talk. The therapist, Bill, is a young man who has just begun his training as a therapist. The patient, Jeanie, a beautiful ex-ballerina, turns out to be not only suicidal (due in part to childhood sexual abuse by her father) but also to have four personalities. His training analyst is concerned and his supervisor recommends that he refer the patient to someone more experienced, but the young man stubbornly insists he has what it takes to work with her. As her personalities reveal themselves, Bill becomes over-involved. His girlfriend, Millie becomes increasingly jealous of this patient. Bill succeeds in partially integrating Jeanie's four personalities and then ends up, after a brawl with her father, in her bed, where he confesses he is in love with her (and her three other personalities). The next day he tells his girlfriend, supervisor and training therapist that he's in love with Jeanie. His girlfriend slaps him. His supervisor threatens to kick him out of the institute. Bill quits the institute in a fit of temper and walks around Central Park in a daze, recalling his own abusive childhood, finally finding his way to his patient's apartment. However, she and her father are waiting for him and his father tells her "Get away from my daughter, quack, and stay away!" It ends up tragically for both.
