The Weekend is a romantic comedy film directed by Stella Meghie and starring Sasheer Zamata, Tone Bell, and DeWanda Wise. The film tells the story of a comedian named Zadie (Zamata) who spends a weekend at a Bed and Breakfast with her ex-boyfriend Bradford (Bell) and his new girlfriend Margo (Wise). The film opens with a montage of Zadie's life as a comedian, performing at clubs and going on occasional dates. She seems content with her life but still holds feelings for her ex-boyfriend Bradford, who broke up with her two years prior. When she receives an invitation from Bradford to join him and Margo at a Bed and Breakfast, she hesitates but ultimately decides to go.
Upon arriving, Zadie is greeted by the friendly owner of the Bed and Breakfast, who immediately takes a liking to her. She also meets Margo, who is polite but aloof towards her. When Bradford arrives, Zadie is visibly nervous but tries to maintain her composure. The trio spends the first night getting to know each other, with Zadie and Bradford reminiscing about their past and Margo watching from a distance.
The next day, the group goes on a hike in the nearby woods. As they walk, Zadie and Bradford's banter becomes more flirtatious, and Margo starts to feel left out. When they reach the top of the hike, Margo becomes angry and confronts Bradford about his behavior towards Zadie. Bradford tries to assure her that he's moved on from his past with Zadie, but Margo is unconvinced.
That night, the tension between the trio reaches its peak. Zadie and Bradford have a heart-to-heart, where Zadie admits that she still has feelings for him. However, Bradford tells her that he thinks they should move on and try to be friends. Margo overhears their conversation and storms out. Zadie and Bradford follow her and the three have a heated argument in the middle of the night. Eventually, they all calm down and decide to enjoy the rest of their weekend together.
On the final day of their trip, the group decides to do an escape room together. As they solve puzzles and work together, they start to bond again. When they finally escape the room, Bradford and Margo share a tender moment and Zadie realizes that it's time for her to move on. The trio says their goodbyes and parts ways, with Zadie feeling renewed and ready to start a new chapter in her life.
The Weekend is a charming and funny film that explores the complexities of romantic relationships and the importance of closure. Meghie's direction is confident and assured, and the performances from the lead actors are all excellent. Zamata brings a grounded and relatable energy to her role, while Bell and Wise have great chemistry together. The film's pacing is a bit slow at times, but overall it's a satisfying and enjoyable watch.
The Weekend is a 1999 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 37 minutes.
