The Three Worlds of Gulliver is a 1960 British-American family adventure fantasy film based on the 1726 novel "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift. The film follows the adventures of an Englishman named Lemuel Gulliver, played by Kerwin Mathews, who gets stranded in a land of tiny people called Lilliput after a shipwreck. He is initially captured and tied up by the tiny people, but as they realize he is not a threat to them, they set him free. Gulliver then helps the Lilliputians with their problems, including a war with a neighboring kingdom.
The film then takes a turn as Gulliver sets sail again and lands on another island, this time inhabited by giant people called Brobdingnagians. There, Gulliver becomes a circus attraction due to his tiny size and ultimately becomes a servant to the young giantess who owns him, played by Jo Morrow. Despite his small size, Gulliver works to prove his worth to the Brobdingnagians and earn his freedom.
As Gulliver continues his travels, he eventually ends up in a land called Laputa, a floating island of scientists and intellectuals who are so lost in their own world that they do not notice or care about the world below them. Gulliver becomes a guest of the island and tries to bring the scientists back down to earth, but ultimately decides to leave the island behind and return home.
Throughout the film, Gulliver battles various obstacles and monsters, including a giant crocodile and a giant bird. He also gains new friends and admirers in each of the worlds he visits, including the princess of Lilliput, played by June Thorburn.
The film, directed by Jack Sher, features impressive special effects for its time, especially in portraying the size differences between Gulliver and the people in each of the three worlds. The intricate details in the costumes and sets also add to the fantastical atmosphere of the film.
While The Three Worlds of Gulliver may not adhere closely to the original story by Jonathan Swift, it still captures the spirit and adventure of Gulliver's Travels. With its memorable characters, stunning visuals, and timeless themes of discovery and self-discovery, this film remains a classic family adventure to this day.
