The Substitute 2: School's Out is a 1998 action thriller and a sequel to the 1996 film, The Substitute. Directed by Steven Pearl and written by Roy Frumkes and Rocco Simonelli, the film stars Owen Stadele as Karl Thomasson, a former mercenary who assumes the identity of a substitute teacher to investigate a drug ring operating within a high school. The film also stars Edoardo Ballerini and Christopher Cousins alongside a cast of young actors.
The film opens with Thomasson being released from prison after having completed his sentence for his actions in the first film. He is met by his friend and former colleague, Brack, who offers him a job to take down a drug lord operating within a high school. Brack convinces Thomasson to take the job by telling him that the school is where the drug lord's son goes to school and that he would be able to get close to him.
Thomasson poses as a substitute teacher and is assigned to the class of Mrs. Walker, who is immediately suspicious of him. He is also met with resistance from some of the students who are loyal to the drug lord's son, Joey. However, he gains the trust of a student named Joey Six, who helps him in his investigation.
As he probes deeper into the drug operation, Thomasson uncovers a conspiracy involving the school's principal, Mr. Alomar, and a corrupt police officer, Detective Olsen, who are protecting the drug lord. The plot thickens as Thomasson's investigation uncovers an even larger scheme that involves international arms dealing and a plot to sell weapons to rebels in Colombia.
The action in the film is fast-paced and intense. There are several fight scenes that showcase Thomasson's skills as a mercenary. The film also features car chases and gun battles, which add to the excitement. The violence in the film is graphic, but not gratuitous, and serves to emphasize the danger that Thomasson and the other characters are facing.
The performances in the film are solid, with Owen Stadele delivering a convincing portrayal of a tough and determined character. Edoardo Ballerini and Christopher Cousins are also impressive as the villains of the story. The scenes between Thomasson and Joey Six are some of the film's most touching moments, as they show a genuine bond between the two characters.
The Substitute 2: School's Out may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it is a solid action thriller that delivers on its promise of thrills and suspense. The film's themes of corruption and betrayal are universal, and the story is well-executed. If you enjoy action movies with a bit of depth, The Substitute 2: School's Out is definitely worth checking out.
