Beginning with the Polynesian migrations to the Hawaiian Islands, this program chronicles the people, events, and social attitudes that created a distinctly Hawaiian culture. The Hawaiian king, Kamehameha, united his people and withstood the advances of foreign cultures. Had the wife of Kamehameha II not broken kapus by eating with men, Hawaiian culture might have withstood the devastating effects of missionaries and foreign speculators and the epidemics they brought. A new immigrant Hawaii emerged with the development of the sugar trade, which made native Hawaiians a disrespected minority. When Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, the stage was set for rampant hatred of Japanese Hawaiians, until statehood allowed a new Hawaii to bloom as it returned to its own culture.
The Story Of Hawaii is a 2007 special interest movie with a runtime of 40 minutes.
