The Sidekick is a heartwarming movie that explores the life of Max McCabe, a 30-something man who has spent most of his life as a beloved sidekick to the world's most famous superhero, Captain Wonder. Despite his constant proximity to fame and fortune, Max's own dreams of stardom have fallen by the wayside, leading him to feel stuck and unfulfilled.
The movie opens with Max attending the unveiling of a statue erected in Captain Wonder's honor. As he gazes up at the larger-than-life sculpture, Max reflects on the decades he's spent as the superhero's best friend and confidante. When Captain Wonder (played by Jay Harrington) takes the stage to deliver a speech, Max can't help but feel a twinge of jealousy as the crowd cheers and photographers swarm around him.
As the ceremony winds down, Max is approached by a reporter (played by Lizzy Caplan) who wants to write a profile on him. Initially hesitant, Max eventually agrees and begins to recount his life story. Flashbacks reveal how Max first met Captain Wonder as a child and became his sidekick when his own powers failed to manifest.
Over the years, Max and Captain Wonder have tackled countless villains and saved the world more times than they can count. They've formed a close bond, with Max serving as the wise-cracking voice of reason to Captain Wonder's more serious demeanor. However, as Max grows older, he begins to feel like his life is passing him by. He's never been able to take the spotlight or make his own mark on the world, and he's starting to wonder if he ever will.
The arrival of a new superhero named Apex (played by Rob Benedict) only intensifies Max's feelings of inadequacy. Apex is young, handsome, and incredibly powerful. He's the next big thing in the superhero world, and Max can't help but feel threatened by him. When Captain Wonder decides to take Apex under his wing and make him his new sidekick, Max is devastated. He feels like he's being pushed aside, like all of his years of loyal service meant nothing.
Determined to prove his worth, Max sets out to take down a notorious villain named The Dawn (played by Ron Livingston). The Dawn is infamous for his ability to control minds, and Max knows that he'll need to be smart to bring him down. He enlists the help of his old friend and former love interest (played by Jordan Peele) to track down The Dawn's lair and stage a daring rescue. Along the way, Max discovers that he's capable of more than he ever thought possible. He may not have superpowers, but he has courage, cunning, and a heart that's bigger than any superhero's.
The Sidekick is a charming and funny movie that explores what it means to be a hero, even if you're not the one wearing the cape. Rob Benedict delivers a standout performance as Apex, bringing just the right amount of arrogance and vulnerability to the role. Ron Livingston is delightfully creepy as The Dawn, and Lizzy Caplan shines as the intrepid reporter who helps Max see himself in a new light. However, it's Rob Benedict's portrayal of Max that really steals the show. He's funny, relatable, and incredibly likable, making The Sidekick a movie that's impossible not to root for.
Overall, The Sidekick is a must-watch for anyone who's ever felt like they're not enough. It reminds us that heroism comes in many forms, and that sometimes the greatest power is simply the power to keep going, even when the odds are against you.
