Set in the fictional Blair General Hospital, The Secret of Dr. Kildare (1939) follows Dr. James Kildare (Lew Ayres) as he faces his toughest case yet. Dr. Kildare is a young physician who has just completed his medical training and is now working as an intern at the hospital. Although he is initially assigned to the pathology department, his passion for medicine and eagerness to help people lead him to interact with patients on a regular basis.
The hospital staff is headed by Dr. Leonard Gillespie (Lionel Barrymore), a experienced and somewhat irascible physician who takes Dr. Kildare under his wing. The young physician is eager to learn, and Dr. Gillespie is happy to teach him, despite the fact that he sometimes chafes against Kildare's impulsive nature. Together, they work to diagnose and treat a wide range of patients, from the wealthy to the working class.
One day, a wealthy patient named Nancy Messenger (Laraine Day) is admitted to the hospital. She is suffering from what appears to be a straightforward case of lobar pneumonia, but when she fails to respond to treatment, Dr. Kildare begins to suspect that something else is at play. His curiosity and dedication to his patients lead him on a quest to uncover the mystery behind Ms. Messenger's disease and to find a cure.
As Dr. Kildare delves deeper into the case, he discovers that Nancy is the victim of a rare and debilitating illness that is caused by exposure to radium. The radium is present in a paint that was used to coat the watch dials at her father's watch factory, and both Nancy and her father have been exposed to it. Although there is no cure for the disease, Dr. Kildare is not deterred. With the help of Dr. Gillespie and his colleagues, he sets out to find a way to slow the progression of the disease and extend Nancy's life.
As Dr. Kildare works tirelessly to help Nancy, he also has to contend with the machinations of Dr. Noseworthy (Lionel Atwill), a rival physician who is eager to ingratiate himself with the hospital's wealthy patrons. Dr. Noseworthy is often a thorn in Dr. Kildare's side, but the younger physician is steadfast in his pursuit of the truth and his commitment to his patients.
Over the course of the movie, Dr. Kildare and his colleagues work together to find a solution to Nancy's illness. Although their efforts are ultimately in vain, their dedication to their work and their patients is inspiring. The Secret of Dr. Kildare is a testament to the heroic efforts of physicians and their staff, who work tirelessly to help those in need, even when the odds seem insurmountable. Through the film, we are reminded of the crucial role that medical professionals play in our society and the incredible challenges they face on a daily basis.
