In the midst of World War I, the United States is sending aid to Great Britain, in spite of the increasing German U-Boat attacks on supply ships. George O'Brien stars as Lt. Cmdr. Mathew "Matt" Roberts who is in command of the American submarine, S13. His mission is to protect a British supply convoy en route to England from Halifax, Nova Scotia through the "war zone" where German submarines have been attacking British and American vessels.
Matt and his crew of 36, including his closest friend, Ensign "Brick" Walters played by Joel McCrea, set sail on their mission of protecting the convoy while enduring perilous depths and evading the enemy.
As they travel underwater in the claustrophobic submarine, tensions mount among the crew, and they struggle with their own fears and anxiety as they face boredom, dangerous weather, and enemy attacks.
During a stopover at a British naval base on the Scottish coast, Matt meets and falls in love with Joan Standish, played by Marion Lessing, a beautiful British widow. Although their time together is brief, they are smitten with each other and they promise to reunite after the war.
As they continue their journey towards the convoy, they encounter a German U-Boat, and a fierce underwater battle ensues. The S13 is damaged and has to surface, but they manage to sink the German sub. But as they begin their descent, a shell strikes the S13 causing significant damage to the sub.
They reach the convoy, and Matt transfers to the freighter Valiant for the remainder of the journey to England. But, when the Valiant meets disaster in the form of a German U-Boat attack, Matt and a small crew including Brick, rescue Joan and other stranded sailors from the sinking ship, and they flee onboard the S13 submarine.
With limited air and food, and the German U-Boats in hot pursuit, the crew of the S13 must race against time and the elements to make it to the safety of the British naval base before it's too late.
