When Hester Prynne has a child out of wedlock she is condemned by her Puritan village to wear a red letter A, for adultery, on her clothing for the rest of her life. Things become even more dismal for her when her husband, thought to be long lost, arrives in the village under a false identity to avenge himself on the unnamed father of the child. This is an early version, though not the first, of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic American novel about sin and redemption.
