The Salton Sea is a 2002 crime thriller that stars Val Kilmer, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Adam Goldberg. Directed by D.J. Caruso, the movie tells the story of a man named Danny Parker (played by Kilmer) who is a former trumpet player and drug addict. After his wife is murdered, Danny becomes entangled in a web of drug deals, murder plots, and double-crosses.
The movie begins with Danny's narration as he describes how he got his nickname: "Tommy the Saint." We see flashbacks of Danny as a trumpet player and his drug use. His wife, Liz, warns him about the dangers of his addiction, but he doesn't listen. One night, Danny returns home to find Liz murdered. He becomes obsessed with finding her killer and sets out on a revenge mission.
Danny's quest for revenge leads him to meet a group of drug dealers known as the Pooh-Bear gang, led by the sociopath Jimmy the Finn (D'Onofrio). The gang is responsible for manufacturing a new type of designer drug called "the shit," which is made from discarded chemicals found near the Salton Sea. Danny infiltrates the gang using his trumpet-playing skills and becomes their top drug dealer. His plan is to find out who killed his wife and take them down from the inside.
Adam Goldberg plays the character of Kujo, a member of the Pooh-Bear gang who befriends Danny. Kujo is a meth addict who is obsessed with conspiracy theories and believes that aliens are coming to Earth to take over. Danny sees Kujo as a way to get close to Jimmy the Finn and uses him to gather information.
As Danny's plan unfolds, we see how he is struggling with his addiction and is haunted by his wife's death. He turns to a woman named Colette (Deborah Kara Unger) for comfort, but she has her own intentions. She wants to use Danny to rob the drug dealers and run away with the money.
The movie is filled with twists and turns as Danny's plans are thwarted and he is constantly on the run. The Salton Sea is a dark and gritty crime thriller that examines addiction, revenge, and the lengths people will go to for their own gain. The performances by Val Kilmer, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Adam Goldberg are outstanding and bring depth to their characters. The cinematography and score of the movie add to the overall eerie atmosphere and suspense.
