In the dystopian future of the late 2010s, America has become a totalitarian state controlled by a televised game show called "The Running Man." The show pits convicted criminals against each other in a deadly hunt through a maze of obstacles, with the promise of freedom if they can survive for 30 days. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Ben Richards, a former cop who was falsely accused of a massacre and forced to participate in the game. Maria Conchita Alonso plays Amber Mendez, a television station employee who becomes embroiled in Richards' fight against the game show's corrupt producers. Yaphet Kotto plays William Laughlin, another contestant who joins Richards in his quest for freedom.
As Richards and his allies navigate the game's deadly traps and fight off the various villains sent after them, they begin to uncover the dark secrets behind the show's production. They learn that the game is rigged, the contestants are often innocent people framed by the government, and that the show's highest-rated contestant, "Captain Freedom," was actually a bodybuilder turned government assassin.
As they continue to elude the show's hunters, Richards and his friends start to inspire the oppressed masses watching at home, and they begin to plan a rebellion against the government. With the help of a shadowy resistance group, they launch an assault on the game show's headquarters and fight to expose the truth to the world.
