The Rookies is an American action-comedy film released in 1989. Directed by Michael Dinner, the movie follows the story of three police cadets who graduate from the academy and embark on their first missions as officers. The movie is set in a small town in Southern California and features a talented cast including Yannick Bisson, Jason Blicker, and Peter MacNeill.

The movie starts with the introduction of three friends; Daryl Cage (Yannick Bisson), Willie Davis (Jason Blicker), and Norman Link (Peter MacNeill). Daryl is the smart and confident one who takes the law seriously. Willie is more of a cowboy who is quick to act and loves to take risks. Norman is the joker of the group who often tries to lighten the mood. Despite their different personalities, they all share a common goal of becoming police officers.

The trio graduates from the academy and quickly find themselves assigned to various departments of the local police force. In their first mission, they are tasked with taking down a drug lord named Maxwell (Gerry Mendicino), who has been responsible for a significant increase in drug-related offenses in the area.

After an unsuccessful attempt to apprehend Maxwell and his gang, the rookies are reprimanded by their superior, Sergeant Larvell Jones (Barry Shabaka Henley). However, when Larvell is taken hostage by Maxwell and his gang, the rookies have to band together and use their individual strengths to rescue their mentor and take down the criminals.

The Rookies has all the elements of an action-packed comedy that appeals to audiences of all ages. The film not only delivers on the genre's expectations of car chases, shootouts, and daring rescues, but it also manages to strike an emotional chord as the friends learn to rely on each other and themselves.

Yannick Bisson who plays Daryl Cage gives a convincing performance as the young officer who is determined to follow the law to a fault. He is the voice of reason in the group, often trying to convince his colleagues to think logically and not let their emotions get the better of them.

Jason Blicker as Willie Davis was the perfect foil to Bisson's Cage. Davis's love for action means he's all-in for whatever the mission entails, regardless of the danger. Blicker delivers his role well and manages to bring a lightheartedness to the movie.

Peter MacNeill's Norman Link was the comedic relief of the movie. MacNeill's portrayal of Link was the perfect contrast to his co-stars, adding levity to the otherwise serious and tense situations.

The supporting cast also deserves recognition, notably Barry Shabaka Henley's performance as Sergeant Jones, who becomes an integral part of the trio's development as police officers.

The film is not without its flaws, which include a predictable storyline that is not exactly memorable. However, the chemistry between the three leads, and the action sequences more than makes up for it.

The movie does well in showcasing the camaraderie between friends as they navigate the life of being police officers. The Rookies has heart and humor, making it a classic '80s movie. It's a film that can be enjoyed by viewers of all ages and is perfect for a cozy family movie night or a fun time with friends.

In conclusion, The Rookies is an action-comedy that is worth watching. It may not be a perfect movie, but its cast and action sequences make up for its predictable plot. It's a film that showcases not just the excitement of being a police officer but the bonds of friendship that endure through the challenges that come with the job.
