The Return of Sherlock Holmes is a 1987 British-American television film. It is based on the original Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The film is directed by Kevin Connor and stars Margaret Colin, Michael Pennington, and Barry Morse. The film takes place in London in the late 19th century, and it follows the story of Sherlock Holmes, a brilliant and eccentric detective, who is believed to have died in a fight with his archenemy Professor Moriarty. However, he suddenly reappears in London after a long period of absence and starts to work on a new case.
In the film, Colin plays the role of Dr. Joanne Watson, a young doctor who becomes Sherlock's assistant. She is fascinated by Sherlock's intelligence and his unconventional methods of solving crimes. Pennington plays the role of Sherlock, the legendary detective who seems to be bored with life after his return to London. He is a flawed character who is struggling with drug addiction and is haunted by his past. Morse plays the role of Inspector Lestrade, the Scotland Yard detective who frequently seeks Sherlock's assistance in solving difficult cases.
The film consists of two separate stories. In the first story, "The Sign of Four," Sherlock is hired by a young woman named Mary Morstan (played by Jenny Seagrove) to solve the mystery of her missing father. The case takes Sherlock and Watson to a dark and dangerous part of London where they uncover a sinister plot involving treasure, a revengeful man and a one-legged man. Along the way, they face danger in the form of traps and deadly snakes. All the while they are pursued by a man who will do anything to get his hands on the treasure.
In the second story, "The Hound of the Baskervilles," Sherlock and Watson are asked by Sir Henry Baskerville (played by Nickolas Grace) to investigate a mysterious death of his uncle, Sir Charles Baskerville. The family is plagued by a curse which is said to have killed many of its members. The investigation takes Sherlock and Watson to the moors of Dartmoor where they encounter a supernatural force that seems to be responsible for the deaths. They quickly realize that the case is much more complicated than it appears.
Both stories are full of suspense, intrigue and twists that keep the viewer engaged until the end. The film is beautifully shot and captures the mood of Victorian London and the eerie moors of Dartmoor. The acting is excellent, with Colin bringing a fresh energy and humor to the role of Watson while Pennington portrays Sherlock with a perfect balance of intelligence and vulnerability.
Overall, The Return of Sherlock Holmes is a must-watch film for anyone who loves detective stories, mysteries, or Sherlock Holmes. It is a faithful adaptation of Conan Doyle's stories that will appeal to both die-hard fans and newcomers to the character.
