Commissioned in celebration of the Russian October Revolution 50 years earlier, this Hungarian Russian co-production focuses on the Russian Civil War in 1919. The "Red" Bolsheviks are aided by Hungarian Communists against the "White" Czarists. A field hospital and a monastery are held by first one side and then the other. The brutality of both sides is highlighted by violence against civilians. Instead of the heroic story of the birth of Soviet Communism, it is a tale of the horrors and chaos of war.
The Red and the White is a 1967 war movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.6.
