Vivian is rich and carefree, he only cares about having a good time. When a practical joke goes sour he is then booted from prestigious Oxford University and sent to South Africa. Location doesn't matter to Vivian who then takes up car racing in addition to his normal, partying ways. His father suddenly dies leaving Vivian solemn and contemplating a serious life change. Then World War II begins and he feels that the best way to redeem himself is by fighting for his country.
