In 1860, Sir James Forbes, a professor arrives at a Cornish village, called by Dr. Peter Tompson, a former pupil and the town physician. A mysterious plague is killing the villagers without explanation, and the local Squire Charles Hamilton refuses to allow autopsies. Opened graves reveal empty coffins, and one woman saw her brother walking the hills in spite of his death the week before.
The squire is a practitioner of Haitian witchcraft, using voodoo magic to first kill the people, then resurrect them as zombies to labor in his unsafe tin mine, avoided by the frightened and superstitious villagers.
