The Pink Panther 2 is a 2009 American action-comedy film directed by Harald Zwart and starring Steve Martin, Jean Reno, and Emily Mortimer. It is a sequel to the 2006 film The Pink Panther, itself a remake of the classic 1963 film of the same name. The film begins with the theft of several of the world's most valuable artifacts, including the Magna Carta, the Shroud of Turin, and the Imperial Sword of Japan. The mastermind behind these heists is a mysterious thief known only as "The Tornado" (John Cleese). In an effort to catch The Tornado before he strikes again, Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus (Reno) assembles a team of the world's greatest detectives, including the bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Martin).
Joining Clouseau on the case are Italian detective Vicenzo (Andy Garcia), British detective Pepperidge (Alfred Molina), and Japanese detective Kenji (Yuki Matsuzaki). Despite their various egos and idiosyncrasies, the detectives must learn to work together if they hope to solve this baffling case.
As they pursue leads across the globe, Clouseau begins to suspect that one of the detectives may actually be The Tornado himself. Meanwhile, Dreyfus is slowly losing his mind as Clouseau's incompetence and bad luck continue to cause chaos and destruction wherever he goes.
Along the way, Clouseau also tries to win the heart of his beautiful colleague Nicole (Mortimer), who is oblivious to his affection and just wants to do her job.
The Pink Panther 2 is a silly, lighthearted romp that doesn't take itself too seriously. The plot is thin and predictable, but the movie is carried by the strength of its ensemble cast. Martin is perfectly cast as the bumbling but lovable Clouseau, and Reno is a delight as his long-suffering boss Dreyfus. Mortimer is charming as Nicole, and the supporting detectives each bring their own brand of comedy to the mix.
The film is peppered with slapstick humor and sight gags, as well as some clever wordplay and puns. It's not the most sophisticated comedy out there, but it's enough to keep audiences laughing throughout.
One potential sticking point for fans of the original Pink Panther movies is the absence of Peter Sellers, who played Clouseau in the original series. Martin does a fine job in the role, but he can't quite match the manic energy and improv skills of Sellers.
Overall, The Pink Panther 2 is a forgettable but entertaining comedy that will please fans of the first film and those looking for a mindless diversion. It's not a classic by any means, but it's a fun way to spend an afternoon.
The Pink Panther 2 is a 2009 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.6 and a MetaScore of 36.
