The Pick-Up Artist is a romantic comedy film that was released in 1987. It's a story about two individuals who are complete opposites of each other and the unusual circumstances that bring them together. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Molly Ringwald, and Dennis Hopper in lead roles, and was directed by James Toback. The film revolves around a young man named Jack Jericho (Robert Downey Jr.), who is known among his friends as the "pick-up artist." He is a smooth-talker and a master of seduction, but he is also a bit of a con artist, and is always on the lookout for his next target. One day, he meets a beautiful woman named Randy Jensen (Molly Ringwald) at a museum, and instantly falls in love with her.
Randy, however, is not interested in Jack's games. She is a working-class girl who is trying to make a living as a makeup artist, and is not willing to be taken in by Jack's charms. Despite their initial differences, the two start to spend time together and develop a friendship. However, things take a turn for the worse when Jack's life starts to get complicated due to some of his shady dealings, and Randy finds herself caught up in the mess.
The film features some great performances by the cast, with Robert Downey Jr. stealing the show in his role as Jack Jericho. He plays the character with a perfect mix of charm and sleaze, and is able to create a character that is both likable and reprehensible at the same time. He is also able to bring out the vulnerability in the character, making him more than just a one-dimensional pick-up artist.
Molly Ringwald is also excellent in her role as Randy Jensen. She is able to bring a lot of depth to the character, and is able to play her with both strength and vulnerability. She is also able to pull off some great comedic moments, making her a perfect foil for Downey's Jack.
The film also benefits from a strong supporting cast, with Dennis Hopper giving a standout performance as Flash Jensen, Randy's father. His character is a bit of a loose cannon, and Hopper is able to bring out both the humor and the danger in his portrayal.
The film is also notable for its great soundtrack, which features a mix of classic and contemporary music. It includes songs by artists like Madonna, Frank Sinatra, and Aretha Franklin, and helps to set the tone for the film.
Overall, The Pick-Up Artist is a fun and entertaining romantic comedy that features some great performances and a strong script. It's a film that has aged well over the years, and is still a pleasure to watch today. If you haven't seen it before, it's definitely worth checking out.
