It is New Year's Eve, and alcoholic David is in a graveyard with his buddies. They are discussing a legend about the fate of the last person to die each year. Their buddy Georges held that distinction the previous year, and as such, he was condemned to use the Phantom Carriage to collect the souls of the departed for that year. When David unexpectedly dies right before midnight, he meets Georges again and is familiarized with his task for the upcoming year.
