In the movie, The Perfect Holiday, Gabrielle Union plays Nancy, a struggling divorced mother of three who works as a waitress in a diner. Morris Chestnut plays Benjamin, a successful songwriter whose egotistical attitude has cost him his marriage and strained his relationship with his daughter, Emily (played by Khail Bryant). Queen Latifah plays Mrs. Christmas, a kind-hearted, all-knowing angel who helps bring them together.
Nancy's children overhear her saying that she wishes to meet a man who will treat her right and take care of the family. They write letters to Santa asking for their mother's wishes to come true. Benjamin is back in his hometown, New Orleans, to surprise Emily for Christmas but his ex-wife, played by Kellee Stewart, makes it difficult for him to see Emily because she is dating a wealthy and snobby man, J-Jizzy (played by Charlie Murphy).
Mrs. Christmas overhears Nancy's children's letters to Santa and decides to help them make their mother's wish come true. She enlists Benjamin's help to buy Nancy's children presents and take them out to have fun. Benjamin reluctantly agrees and as they spend more time together, he and Nancy develop feelings for each other.
But J-Jizzy is not happy that Benjamin is spending time with his girlfriend and her kids. He attempts to sabotage their relationship and ruin Christmas for everyone. However, Mrs. Christmas intervenes and helps Benjamin and Nancy find their way back to each other.
The movie is a heartwarming holiday rom-com that emphasizes the spirit of Christmas and the importance of family. Gabrielle Union and Morris Chestnut have great chemistry and their characters' transformation from being jaded to being in love is satisfying. Queen Latifah brings her signature charisma and warmth to the role of Mrs. Christmas, and her scenes provide much-needed levity and wisdom.
The film not only touches upon the themes of love and family, but also addresses important issues such as single parenthood, forgiveness, and humility. As an African-American-led cast, The Perfect Holiday also provides representation and diversity in the holiday movie genre.
The settings and costumes of the film add to the overall charm and ambiance of the movie. The New Orleans backdrop sets a festive tone and the elaborate Christmas decorations and outfits add to the magic of the holiday season.
Overall, The Perfect Holiday is an enjoyable and heartwarming film that is perfect for the holiday season.
