The Parish is a 2019 horror film that tells the story of a small town in Louisiana called "Watford" that is overcome by a supernatural force. The movie stars Angela DiMarco as "Hailey," a woman who returns to Watford with her husband "Matt" (played by Ray Tagavilla) and daughter "Rose" (played by Amber Pauline Magdesyan) in order to renovate and re-open an old bed and breakfast called "The Parish."
As Hailey and her family settle into their new home, they quickly begin to realize that something is not quite right in the town. They start to experience strange occurrences, and it becomes clear that they are not alone in The Parish. Hailey's daughter, Rose, begins to have disturbing visions that lead Hailey to explore the town's dark past.
Eventually, Hailey discovers that Watford was once home to a cult that worshipped a demon named "Aziel," and that their rituals and sacrifices have left a powerful evil presence in the town. As Hailey tries to uncover the truth about the cult and stop the demon, she is forced to confront her own dark past and the secrets she has been trying to keep hidden.
The Parish is a spooky and atmospheric horror movie that relies on suspense and tension to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The cinematography is beautiful, with lots of moody lighting and shadowy shots that add to the overall eerie vibe of the film.
Angela DiMarco is fantastic in the lead role, delivering a nuanced and complex performance as Hailey, a woman struggling with her own demons while trying to protect her family from the forces of evil in her new home. Sanae Loutsis also shines as "Delia," a local historian who helps Hailey uncover the dark history of Watford.
Bill Oberst Jr. plays "Father Luke," a priest who knows more about the demon than he initially lets on. Oberst is a veteran character actor in the horror genre, and his performance here is suitably creepy and unsettling.
The Parish is a solid horror movie that will appeal to fans of the genre who are looking for something scary and atmospheric. With its Louisiana setting, rich history, and haunting imagery, it stands out from the crowd of more formulaic horror movies.
The movie does have some pacing issues, and some viewers may find it a bit slow at times. Additionally, while the climactic showdown with the demon is suitably intense and scary, it does feel a bit rushed and underdeveloped.
However, these minor quibbles aside, The Parish is a well-made and engaging horror movie with plenty of scares and surprises to keep audiences entertained. Anyone looking for a spooky and atmospheric movie with a strong female lead and a unique setting should check it out.
The Parish is a 2021 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 22 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.8.
