The Other Sister is a 1999 romantic comedy-drama directed by Garry Marshall. The movie stars Juliette Lewis as Carla Tate, a young woman with a developmental disability, who seeks independence and love. Diane Keaton plays the role of Carla's overprotective mother, Elizabeth, while Giovanni Ribisi takes on the character of Daniel, a man with a similar condition as Carla.

The movie begins with Carla leaving a special school for individuals with intellectual disabilities and returning home to her parents' mansion in San Francisco. She is excited to be back but is eager to find a way to become more independent. Carla's parents have always been overprotective of her, and her mother, in particular, is hesitant to let her out of sight. Carla's father, on the other hand, is supportive of Carla's desire to be independent, and encourages her to take classes at a community college.

Carla's journey to independence is one of the primary themes in The Other Sister. She dreams of having her own apartment and being in a romantic relationship. Her parents are skeptical and believe that she isn't capable of achieving these things. However, Carla is determined and enlists the help of a social worker, played by Tom Skerritt, to assist her in finding a suitable job and apartment.

In her efforts to become more independent, Carla meets Daniel at a support group for disabled individuals. Daniel is different from Carla in that he is highly intelligent but struggles with social interactions. Despite their differences, Carla and Daniel quickly become friends, and Daniel finds himself helping Carla prepare for a talent show.

As their friendship deepens, Carla and Daniel fall in love. However, their families are not as supportive of their relationship as they initially hoped. Carla's mother is concerned about her daughter's safety, while Daniel's mother is skeptical of Carla's intentions. The couple faces several challenges on their road to happiness, including disapproving family members and their own self-doubts.

The Other Sister successfully explores the themes of independence, love, and acceptance. The film presents a positive portrayal of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their ability to live fulfilling lives. It also highlights the importance of familial support and the consequences of over-protection.

Juliette Lewis delivers an outstanding performance as Carla; she portrays the character with warmth and authenticity, and her chemistry with Ribisi is heartwarming. Diane Keaton delivers a powerful performance as Carla's mother, Elizabeth. Her character is initially overprotective, but her positive change throughout the movie is evident. Giovanni Ribisi is equally impressive in his portrayal of Daniel, a man with a unique personality.

The Other Sister is a well-made movie that manages to be both heartwarming and thought-provoking. The film's message of love and acceptance is delivered in a way that is both entertaining and inspiring. The movie has a strong character-driven narrative and a fantastic cast that brings the story to life. It is an inspiring and heartwarming movie that promotes the message of accepting differences and living life to the fullest.

The Other Sister is a 1999 comedy with a runtime of 2 hours and 9 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 28.
