Jill is close to her family, especially her father, who is her coach and encourages her to pursue her dreams. She also has a boyfriend, a local boy named Tommy (played by Beau Bridges). Things are going well for Jill until one day when she suffers a serious accident during a race. The accident leaves her paralyzed from the neck down and changes her life forever.

Jill eventually finds hope in the form of a new boyfriend, also named John, who is a photographer. John helps Jill to rediscover her love of nature and the beauty of the world around her. He takes her on trips to the mountains, and she rediscovers her joy in skiing, even though she is no longer able to do it herself.
The movie ends with Jill giving a speech to a group of disabled children in which she tells them that they are not alone and that there is hope for them.
