In the year 1977, a biological war has wiped out almost all of humanity, leaving only a handful of survivors who are immune to the virus. In "The Omega Man," Charlton Heston plays Robert Neville, a scientist who may be the last human inhabiting the desolate streets of Los Angeles. Neville spends his days scavenging for food and supplies, avoiding the danger of the "Family," a group of infected survivors who have become mutated, nocturnal creatures who despise Neville's immunity.

Previously a brilliant researcher, Neville now spends his nights barricading himself in his fortified apartment, listening to classical music, drinking heavily, and watching old films. He struggles to find a cure for the virus that has ravaged humanity, convinced that a vaccine is the only way for him to rebuild society.

One day, Neville stumbles upon a group of healthy individuals led by a woman named Lisa (Rosalind Cash). Neville is intrigued by this new group, but he soon realizes that Lisa and her companions are wary of him as well. They believe that Neville's immunity to the virus makes him dangerous and that his very existence perpetuates the spread of the virus. In addition, Neville's incessant playing of classical music on his turntable and the presence of his heavily armed apartment convey a sense of authority on the streets, making him a target for the Family's wrath.

As the only known, completely healthy human, Neville must find a way to connect with Lisa and her followers to prove that he is not a monster. Along the way, he learns the truth about the virus that nearly destroyed humankind and about the mutated survivors who have become the new masters of the earth.

Throughout the film, Heston delivers an intense and convincing performance, portraying Neville as a bitter and lonely man who is haunted by the memories of his family and friends, who have succumbed to the virus. The stark and desolate landscape of Los Angeles serves as the perfect backdrop for the story, conveying a sense of loneliness and isolation that is palpable.

The Omega Man stands out as an early example of post-apocalyptic sci-fi, with its focus on humanity's struggle for survival in the wake of a catastrophic event. While the special effects and makeup are admittedly dated by today's standards, the film remains a classic due to its compelling narrative and powerful performances.

Overall, The Omega Man is a gripping and suspenseful drama that is as relevant today as it was when it was released in 1971. The film's themes of isolation, survival, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity continue to resonate with contemporary audiences. It is truly a stellar example of science fiction filmmaking that will leave an indelible mark on viewers long after the credits have rolled.

The Omega Man is a 1971 science fiction movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 56.
