Larry Doyle is a newspaper journalist who has fallen on hard times after he angers the Chicago police chief. Doyle gets involved with a young woman who has also fallen on hard time, Anne, and together the pair pose as a honeymooning couple taking a suite in a hotel. In a bid to raise some money to pay for their life together Doyle contacts his former newspaper editor and tells him he can find the mysterious gangster known as the Eel, which sets Doyle and Anne on a dangerous quest together.
