In the 1986 comedy film, The Money Pit, Tom Hanks and Shelley Long play a young couple named Walter and Anna who are ready to move out of their cramped apartment in New York City. They find a beautiful, grand mansion that they can afford to purchase thanks to a foreclosure sale. However, it isn't long before they realize that they have made a huge mistake.

The mansion, as it turns out, is not fit for human habitation. The roof collapses, the pipes burst, the stairs fall apart, and everything else that could possibly go wrong, does. Walter and Anna soon discover that they have bought a "money pit," a financial disaster that they will never be able to recover from.

Walter, who is an entertainment lawyer, is soon swamped with work and can't be there to oversee the renovations. Anna, who is an accomplished classical musician, takes the lead and hires a contractor named Art Shirk (played by Joe Mantegna) who assures her that he can do the work quickly and cheaply.

As the renovation work progresses, it becomes clear that Art is not capable of doing the job he was hired to do. The house becomes a nightmare of hazards, from the crumbling floors to the collapsing walls. Walter quits his job to oversee the construction and both he and Anna become obsessed with the project.

Despite their best efforts, the house seems to be one step ahead of them at every turn. They are perpetually out of money, and the work is never completed. Their relationship starts to suffer, as the stress of the renovation takes its toll on their marriage. Anna becomes convinced that the house is cursed, and they are destined to spend the rest of their lives there.

Just when it seems like there is no hope for Walter and Anna, a wealthy businessman named Max Beissart (played by Alexander Godunov) comes to their rescue. Max offers them a loan to finish the house, with the condition that he gets to keep the mansion as collateral. Walter and Anna reluctantly agree, and the work is finally completed.

With the mansion finally finished, Walter and Anna are ready to move in and start their new life. However, they soon discover that Max Beissart was not the knight in shining armor they thought he was. He had his own reasons for helping them, and it turns out that he is not the kind of person that they wanted to associate with.

The Money Pit is a hilarious film about the American Dream gone awry. It is a story about how we can get caught up in the pursuit of material wealth and forget about what is truly important. The performances by Tom Hanks, Shelley Long, and Alexander Godunov are top-notch, and the script is full of one-liners that will have audiences rolling in the aisles.

The film is directed by Richard Benjamin and produced by Steven Spielberg. The Money Pit is a classic comedy that remains popular to this day, and it is a must-see for anyone who has ever embarked on a home renovation project.

The Money Pit is a 1986 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 31 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 49.
