The Machine is a sci-fi thriller set in the near-future where the world is in a state of constant war. The story revolves around Vincent McCarthy (played by Toby Stephens), a brilliant scientist working for the Ministry of Defence, who is tasked with creating a super-soldier that can help tip the power balance in favour of Great Britain.

In his top-secret laboratory, McCarthy develops an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that can operate independently and exhibits human-like intelligence. He hires Ava (Caity Lotz), a brilliant programmer, to help him perfect the AI system. Together, they develop the most advanced AI system that surpasses human intelligence and consciousness, creating a true synthesis of man and machine.

However, things soon take a dark turn when the project is hijacked by a rival group with sinister motives. Forced to flee, McCarthy and Ava are hunted by the enemy and must rely on their creation, the super-advanced AI named 'The Machine', to help them survive.

As they journey deeper into the unknown, they soon discover that the Machine is a true marvel of technology, capable of evolving beyond human comprehension. But with great power comes great responsibility, and they realise that in the wrong hands, the Machine could be a devastating weapon.

As the duo try to keep the Machine out of the wrong hands, they encounter an unexpected ally in the form of Thomson (Denis Lawson), a high-ranking military officer who believes in the power of the Machine to bring peace to the world.

Together, they must navigate a dangerous web of politics, spies, and war to protect the Machine and ensure that their creation is not used for nefarious purposes.

The Machine is a deeply thrilling and thought-provoking movie that explores the ethical challenges of creating artificial intelligence. It raises questions about what it means to be human and how far we should go in the name of technological progress.

Toby Stephens delivers a mesmerising performance as the scientist whose good intentions spiral out of control. Caity Lotz is equally impressive as the programmer who becomes the Machine's closest confidante. Denis Lawson brings a stoic dignity to his role as the military officer who recognises the Machine's potential for good.

Overall, The Machine is an intelligent and gripping sci-fi movie that offers high-octane action and philosophical musings in equal measure.

The Machine is a 2014 science fiction movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 31 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.0 and a MetaScore of 52.
