The Long Dumb Road is a 2018 comedy-drama road trip film directed by Hannah Fidell. The movie features Tony Revolori as Nat, a recent high school graduate who is en route to Los Angeles to start college. Nat's car breaks down in the middle of the desert, leaving him stranded with nothing but his luggage and a newly-acquired skateboard.
As he tries to figure out how to get to Los Angeles, he meets Richard, played by David DeLao, a charismatic mechanic who offers to help Nat fix his car. After repairing the car overnight, Richard offers to give Nat a ride to LA in his dilapidated van. Despite initial reluctance, Nat eventually agrees, and the two set out on a journey full of unexpected detours and adventures.
Throughout the film, Nat and Richard develop an unlikely friendship. Richard, a seasoned traveler and a man of few words, teaches Nat important life lessons about independence, self-reliance, and the importance of living in the present moment. Meanwhile, Nat's youthful optimism and exuberance remind Richard of the joys of simple pleasures in life.
As they travel through the desert and small towns, the two men encounter a colorful cast of characters, including hitchhikers, bar patrons, motel managers, and drug dealers. Each encounter reveals more about Nat and Richard's personalities and backgrounds, and helps them both grow as individuals.
At its heart, The Long Dumb Road is a coming-of-age story about a young man's journey towards self-discovery and the unlikely friendship he forges along the way. It is also a tribute to the American road trip genre, with stunning vistas of the desert and nostalgic shots of Route 66.
Tony Revolori delivers a standout performance as Nat, imbuing the character with a charm and innocence that make him endearing to audiences. David DeLao is equally impressive as Richard, a man who has lived a hard life but finds redemption in his interactions with Nat.
The film also features strong supporting performances from Lora Martinez-Cunningham as Richard's estranged wife, who adds emotional weight to the story, and Casey Wilson as a motel manager who is simultaneously hilarious and heartwarming.
The Long Dumb Road is a gentle and warm-hearted film that explores universal themes of friendship, self-discovery, and the joy of living in the moment. It is a film that will make audiences laugh, cry, and feel inspired to hit the road and embark on their own journey of self-discovery.
