The Little Traitor is a heartwarming tale of friendship and self-discovery set in 1947 Palestine. The movie follows the story of Proffy Liebowitz, a young boy who is about to become a man in an uneasy time of change for his homeland. Proffy is fascinated by the British soldiers who patrol his village and idolizes them, despite the political climate that sees them as oppressors. When Proffy is caught out after curfew, he is taken to headquarters and interrogated by Sergeant Dunlop, an Englishman who shows him kindness and respect.
Sergeant Dunlop takes Proffy under his wing, teaching him English and introducing him to British culture. Through their unlikely friendship, Proffy begins to see his own people and the world around him differently.
The Little Traitor is a beautifully shot and emotionally charged film that explores the complexities of identity, nationalism, and friendship. Proffy's journey from naive schoolboy to informed young man is beautifully paced, and the movie does an excellent job of placing his coming-of-age story in the context of a much larger struggle for freedom and self-determination.
Ido Port gives an outstanding performance as Proffy, capturing both the youthful exuberance and the inner turmoil of a boy forced to confront difficult truths about his own identity and his place in the world. Alfred Molina is equally impressive as Sergeant Dunlop, bringing a real warmth and humanity to a character who could easily have come across as a stereotypical colonial figure.
Gilya Stern is also excellent as Proffy's mother, conveying both the love and the fear that come with raising a child in a time of conflict. The supporting cast is uniformly strong, with many actors delivering powerful performances in smaller roles.
The Little Traitor also deserves special commendation for its portrayal of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Instead of taking sides or preaching a particular message, the movie simply presents a vivid and nuanced portrait of a deeply divided land and its people.
The Little Traitor is ultimately a story about the power of human connection to overcome even the most ingrained prejudices and divisions. It's a movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll, and a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is hope for a better future through understanding and compassion.
The Little Traitor is a 2007 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.9 and a MetaScore of 47.
